After years of transportation issues & limited access to the Island of Montreal by residents & works in the off-island communities of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the Quebec government finally decided to begin addressing them.
Until recently, the only way for those off-island to gain access to the Island of Montreal from the west was via the Trans-Canada Autoroute 40’s Ile-Aux-Tourtes bridge, or along Autoroute 20’s Galipault Bridge. However, as the Quebec government has acknowledged, since it’s inauguration in 1965, the bridge has been plaqued with construction and maintenance flaws, and has required several rounds of major maintenance. This all culminated in a short term closure of the bridge in the spring of 2021 after “human error” flaws during what had become routine maintenance were discovered.
